Abstract

  • In September 2017, all CPI cities in North Sumatra experienced inflation, namely Sibolga at 0.93 percent; Pematangsiantar of 0.55 percent; Medan by 1.08 percent; and Padangsidimpuan at 0.40 percent. Thus, North Sumatra in September 2017 experienced inflation of 0.99 percent.
  • In September 2017, inflation stood at 1.08 percent or an increase in index from 133.87 in August 2017 to 135.31 in September 2017. Inflation was due to an increase in prices as indicated by the increase of most of the expenditure group index, the group foodstuffs of 3.97 percent; food, beverage, cigarette and tobacco group by 0.34 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel by 0.17 percent; clothing group by 0.68 percent; and the health group by 0.06 percent. Meanwhile, the group that experienced a decrease in index, namely the transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.04 percent. While the education, recreation, and sports groups did not experience any index changes.
  • Major commodities contributing to inflation during September 2017 in Medan include: red pepper, tuna / ambul-ambu, cayenne pepper, rice with side dish, dencis, chicken meat, and fruit tomatoes.
  • Of the 23 CPI cities on Sumatra Island, the highest inflation occurred in Medan of 1.08 percent with CPI of 135.31 and the lowest occurring in Dumai of 0.05 percent with CPI 132.19. Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Tanjung Pandan at 0.87 percent with CPI 136.74 and the lowest was in Tembilahan at 0.01 percent with CPI of 133.95.
